In the Community:

Community Service Day

Community Service Day is an event in which all RIFP students as part of their ESL class go out in the community and volunteer.

For 2008 we volunteered at the following organizations:  Tacoma Rescue Mission, Hospitality Kitchen, YWCA, Tacoma Nature Center, Fish Food Bank and Toy Rescue Mission.

We had 8 students along with staff members and volunteers at each site.  Volunteering helps the students feel part of this community and also practice their English.  Each group of students volunteers for 2 hours at the site for a total of 112 volunteer hours, not bad for a days work.  I was assigned to the YWCA with 7 students and we cleaned the GYM/Child care space.  We cleaned and disinfected all the toys and folded 4000 envelopes for their fund raising dept.

Thank you for your support in making this happen.

-Marisol Melendez, RIFP Coordinator
